Another Winter’s Day in Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 9 February 2014 (PM update): Another Winter's Day in Nozawa Onsen

Remember to ski and board carefully guys. Otherwise you many end up eating sushi in a Japanese hospital for some time. We all wish you a speedy recovery Judita and everyone here in Nozawa is thinking of you.

New Snow since close: 10 cm

Weather; Overcast

At the moment it is overcast in Nozawa Onsen, with occasional patches of blue sky. Currently there is no snow falling, however we do expect some light flurries throughout the day. Skiing will be good throughout with light dry powder up top and fast, smooth groomers from top to bottom. Conditions remain dangerous with hidden death cookies in the backcountry, especially on south facing walls. Be extra vigilant in the run outs.

Yesterday was pretty nice. A standard winters day in Nozawa really. Waist deep powder amongst the trees. Fast groomers, cold, snowing and not that much blue sky.  Perfect conditions for the powders hounds descending on the resort.

According to the predictions snow is set to continue today and tomorrow before easing into Thursday with some clear days following possible. Isolated snow showers and possible during this time period.

There is a fundraiser for Judita (see photo above) tomorrow night who was recently badly injured in a skiing accident at Nozawa. You may or may not have seen these guys around town lately but you should certainly come and meet them. They came across our lovely Judita when she had her accident and were so impressed by her strength and positive attitude as they helped her on the slopes, that they’re starting a fund raiser for her this Monday night at Shot Bar Heaven. Consider this the ‘Shave for Judita’! Jackson’s curly locks are going at at least 1000 yen a snip and all proceeds go to Judita’s recovery. Come and help these boys put a smile back on her face

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 8 February 2014

At the moment we have some moderate snow flurries about the village. Visibility at all elevations is good for the time being even with the cloud and snow so the riding will be good throughout. Groomed runs will be smooth with a nice dusty powder layer whereas the trees will offer some moderately deep powder.

The off piste areas remain very dangerous at the moment not necessarily because of instability, but more so because of hidden death cookies. The large balls of ice, which accumulated in the run outs of chutes and gullies during the recent warm spell, hide beneath the layer of fresh powder ready to snare unsuspecting victims. It is very difficult to determine their locations under a flat open powder field and so there have been a number of injuries lately, some very serious. It is crucial to take it easy through these slopes until the death cookies are buried beneath consolidated snow and never ride alone.

Snowfalls are set to continue the rest of today, increasing in intensity later. Snowfalls are also predicted for tomorrow and Monday. Further ahead another solid at this time dump is forecast for Tuesday night into Wednesday. All-in-all it should be a good week ahead.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 7 February 2014

Very cold temperatures are continuing in Nozawa Onsen at the present time. This morning it was -10 ℃ degrees in the village. There has been 10-20cm of fresh snow since the last reports. The piste is in better condition now as compared to the last week or two. It has a soft top and there will be plenty of fresh to be found in the trees. However still take care as the base needs to be consolidated especially on the lower slopes.

Good luck to Ueno Manami from Nozawa Onsen who is competing at Sochi in the freestyle skiing women’s halfpipe. Manami is a member of the Nozawa Onsen Ski Club. Ganbatte Manami-san!

Further ahead, we expected another extended period of moderate snowfalls and cold temps from Saturday into Tuesday next week. From then on things are not quite as clear. Donb’t forget that the Iiyama Snow Festival is on this weekend for those in the area.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 6 February 2014

Very cold temperatures and light snow are continuing in Nozawa Onsen at the present time. You could say that the riding today will be epic! Many areas of off piste powder were left untouched yesterday and with the additional 15cm that has fallen last night there are sure to be some very deep stashes about. Time to get out and get amongst it! Wind strength is far less than what we experienced yesterday.

Yesterday was so far the coldest day of the season with a top temperature at the summit of -12C at the summit. As a result, the snow was extremely dry. It was so cold and dry that ultra cold weather wax was required for maximum drive and speed over the snow. Off piste was quite variable and dangerous. Some areas had waist deep powder on an icy base, stability was low. With decent speed it felt bottomless however. Other areas were sheet ice, heavily scoured with prominent death cookies hidden under a layer of powder. You needed to know where to go really. Conditions should become excellent over time with a degree of consolidation.

According to the forecast light snowfalls and very cold temperatures are set to continue the rest of today before becoming isolated overnight into tomorrow. Later tomorrow partly cloudy conditions are a definite possibility. Further ahead, we expected another extended period of moderate snowfalls and cold temps from Saturday into Tuesday next week. The Iiyama Snow Festival is on this weekend for those in the area.

Weather: Windy with snow

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 5 February 2014

We have some heavy weather about the village and mountain today in Nozawa Onsen. It is extremely cold, maybe the coldest during snowfalls of any time this season. The wind is very strong, the gondolas are running at the moment, but it would be surprising if they stay open for any length of time unless the wind decreases. Its currently partly cloudy with isolated snow showers, which are expected to continue on and off today.

The wind drifts today will be deep, very deep and the riding will be outstanding amongst the trees. The classic light dry Japow that we have been missing for the past week, woohoo! No venturing outside the resort area today without the necessary avi gear as all this new snow is very unstable sitting on an icy base layer. Groomed runs will be nice, silky smooth and fast with the very cold temperatures.

According to the forecast snow showers will continue until late Thursday before easing entirely. Friday has the possibility of being clear at this stage. Further ahead we are set for another period of moderate snowfalls beginning Saturday and lasting for at least three days.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 4 February 2014

At last! We have some fresh snow falling in Nozawa Onsen today. Not much with only a dusting across the mountain but at least its a start and a sign of things to come with snowfall rates expected to increase later today. The mountain will be fast and icy early and the tree runs will be a challenge in the conditions. With the continued snowfalls conditions should improve later in the day.

Yesterday was slushy, classic spring conditions, which is very unusual considering the time of year. Nevertheless there was fun to be had on the pistes after they softened. The snow was quite fast, better than the day before. Off piste areas were not the best to be honest. The park and pipe were in fine form considering the snow conditions.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 4 February 2014

Conditions today in Nozawa Onsen

Looking at the forecast, snowfalls should increase to moderate levels overnight with around 10-20cm expected. Tomorrow will be windy and cold but the fresh powder will more than make up for it. Snowfalls are expected to ease over this time before becoming isolated on Thursday. Friday should clear to bluebird conditions.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 2 February 2014

A slightly clear morning here in Nozawa Onsen today with some fog up the top.  We have some mid to high level altostratus cloud affected by strong wind sheer. This tends to indicate it will be windy at the peak today, so some lifts may be placed on wind hold. The visibility below the cloud layer is excellent, look for patterns of sun streaking across the surrounding ranges. No new snow overnight and it’s very warm here for February.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 2 February 2014

Interesting pine forested terrain.

Unfortunately we have some warm temperatures today, positive across all elevations of the mountain. As a result soft and forgiving spring like conditions will prevail. There is some chance of rain later in the day and possibly tomorrow. The Nozawa weather forecast fortunately shows more snow returning on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Head for high traffic groomers which will retain the greatest speeds. Today conditions will be akin to a pleasant springtime ski. Firm pistes softening as the day goes on. Alright for some gentle turns and a couple of beers in the sun afterwards.  Also worth a look is the ski jump competition which is taking place near the bottom of skyline and the downhill event on Kandahar. Also check out the free snowboard test rides today over on Kandahar slopes.

Luckily these warm temperatures will soon move on. The freezing level is forecast to take a massive nosedive around lunch tomorrow. Moderate snowfalls are expected commencing Monday night, continuing until Thursday. Temperatures will be very cold, around -12C at the summit, before windchill. Following this extended snowy period we should see clear conditions before further forecast snowfalls next weekend. Very cold temperatures will remain throughout. Be careful if you are driving because there are some icy patches on the roads.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 31 January 2014:

Sorry for the lateness of the report today but our usual reporter was indisposed. Yesterday in Nozawa Onsen we had generally grey skies with little fresh snow to have a go at plus some rain up the top of the resort. This morning we had some grey skies early but it cleared away over the day although still foggy up near the top. There has also been some continuing rain overnight down at village level with some snow higher up on Yamabiko. There was some light snowfalls forecast for today, which haven’t really eventuated, and then again on Monday. However with the temperature being quite warm there is a chance of some further rain on Sunday.

A fair majority of the lifts are turning around and all courses are open except for Kandahar East and Kandahar West. The base is getting a bit dodgy on the lower slopes with some brush and roots exposed so we definitely recommend staying out of the trees for now. Needless to say it hasn’t been a great couple of weeks here but hopefully February will turn things around.

Down in Iiyama they are getting ready for the local snow festival which will be held on the 8th and 9th February. If you will be in Nozawa Onsen next weekend it’s well worth the short ride down to check it out.

Very very cold here last night in Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort but today the sun is shining and all is good with the world. No fresh snow overnight so today everyone is riding nice firm groomers with still plenty of soft stuff to be found if you look. Should be the same tomorrow till later in the day when there will be some more snow continuing through Sunday, although there is also a slight chance of some rain lower down.

Over the weekend there will be all kinds of goodies to trial including snowbikes. Check it out next to the Nagasaka ticket box between 10-3 on Saturday and Sunday.
