Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 28 January 2016

After two bluebird days in Nozawa, the sun is still shining brightly upon our little part of the globe for a third day. There may be some cloud forming later during the day, with a likely chance of snow beginning to fall by the afternoon. For the morning, conditions are a little slushy with the sun and mild temperatures taking their toll on the snowpack, though make no mistake, on piste conditions are still great.

Once this evening’s snow starts dropping, We’re expecting to see it continue throughout the weekend, with the heaviest dump on Friday night. It’s exciting to see that our forecast has been boosted and let’s hope it stays that way.

Temperatures will be dropping down again by the weekend and should stay low for all of next week. There are plenty of small snowfalls expected in the coming week so our base should keep building up gradually.

Exciting news for Nozawa Onsen

Start saying goodbye to the trees and shrubs, they’ll soon be covered in snow!

It’s cold outside and even colder up the top. The forecast has blessed us with an even better prediction than yesterday; a solid 43cm for tomorrow which is just what we need! Unfortunately there’s no snow in the village just yet but we’re expecting some tonight. The top of the resort will be getting a nice dusting over the course of today.

The photo featured here is of one of Nowawa’s most famous Onsen, a traditional experience and a great way to prepare your muscles for the weekend when our lifts will hopefully be open.

Looking outside we can see some thick clouds covering the higher sections of Nozawa Onsen. They’re looking quite heavy and ready to unload some snow. Whether they do or not is out of our control, but there’s no harm in hoping. Any moment now!

We will also be active on instagram this season, so send any of your best photos or use the hashtag ‪#‎nozawaholidays‬ and we might feature them on https://www.instagram.com/nozawaholidays/

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report: 12 April 2014 and that’s a wrap

As you’ve probably guessed by now the season is just about done here. There are still some lifts open with keen skiers enjoying the sun and spring conditions. There is some ski cross on this weekend as well as a chance to check out some demo skis and boards for the 2014/15 season. Some lifts will stay open until the end of Golden Week here (May 6) or if the snow runs out sooner. Of course it’s naturally a great time to be out in the backcountry.

Around 50cm has fallen in Nozawa Onsen overnight! On top of the 30+ cm we got yesterday this is looking like a “Marvellous Meter” dump. The weather is generally sunny with occasional mist and clouds up the top. The snow should continue on and off for the next week at least, so look forward to some great Nozawa Onsen powder days. Here is some footage from one of the Nozawa Holidays guests yesterday. As you can see even the groomers are powder runs. You might have to hire some powder skis!

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report, 8 January 2014

We have a marginal morning here in Nozawa Onsen. The good news is that high clouds are racing across the skies indicating an approaching cold front expected tonight. But for the time being we have prefrontal warmth with temperatures into the positives. Best areas for skiing today will be the groomed runs which should be slightly wet, especially later in the day.

Nozawa Holidays, Lodge Nagano, Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Holidays, Lodge Nagano, Nozawa Onsen

Yesterday was yet another great day in Nozawa Onsen. Good knee deep off piste conditions remained until the afternoon, when the snow became slightly heavy. The visibility was outstanding, almost as good as it gets with views all the way to Hakuba and the western coastline. It was a great day to burn down the groomers to such views, especially considering the uncrowded slopes.

The expected forecast continues to impress. From tomorrow we should expect a lengthy cold outbreak with sustained moderate snowfalls, becoming heavy at times. The first flakes should fall overnight tonight becoming heavy by early morning and remaining that way for most of tomorrow. From then we expect further snowfalls until at least Monday, probably longer. Temperatures should be very cold (-10 to -15C up top) ensuring the snow quality is as good as it gets. Winds are expected to be moderate for most of the time.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report, 6 January 2014

The light snow just doesn’t seem to stop here in Nozawa Onsen. At the moment we have quite cold temperatures and continued flurries which have lasted the night. Since close of lifts 5cm has been added up top, 8cm mid mountain indication windblown conditions. Conditions will be excellent across the whole mountain. Groomers will be fast and smooth. The trees and off piste will have superb moderately deep powder stashes. Nice!

Since yesterday the crowds have dramatically dropped off as Japanese tourists return home after their holidays. Reports from the mountain indicated plentiful fresh lines well into the afternoon, even in the more frequented haunts.

The current forecast looks even more promising than current conditions. Overnight we have seen an upgrade in the system expected in the second half of this week. The system is quite cold and strong with a classic NW winter airflow which will pick up substantial moisture from the Sea of Japan. We expect the first snow to fall Wednesday night some time building in intensity over Thursday. Friday should be very cold with continued moderate snowfalls and Saturday should see a possible clearing trend. As a bonus the prefrontal warmth expected Wednesday has been slightly downgraded, with cooler conditions predicted. It looks like the week ahead will be very good indeed.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report, 4 January 2014

This morning in Nozawa we have some light snow falling across the resort. Although quite wet at the moment, temperatures are set to drop to around sea level seeing an improvement in the snow quality later in the afternoon.

Visibility is limited on the top half of the mountain and winds are gusting moderate at the summit. Best skiing today will be tree lined groomers in the morning transitioning to the upper trees as snow accumulates during the afternoon.

Yesterday was an excellent day on the hill, especially in the morning where cold temperatures and blue sky persisted. Combined with the deep powder from recent falls there was some outstanding off piste runs on offer. During the afternoon temperatures and sun created very heavy snow below 1000m, but up high the quality was still good.

Holiday crowds meant the were big lines in parts although thankfully these crowds will disperse after the weekend, as the Japanese holidays have officially finished.

Looking at the forecast ahead, light snow should continue today before clearing tomorrow. Monday should see further flurries before another solid dump expected for Thursday next week. Although this is subject to revisions as the date draws closer.

 Nozawa Snow Report: Today’s overview

We currently have light snow falling about the village this morning. Not as much as originally expected however one can argue with fresh snow, with 10cm being recorded up high on the ski resort.  Best skiing will be on the upper reaches of the mountain where coldest conditions are producing the best snow quality.

Yesterday had some good top to bottom skiing on the groomed runs where conditions remained smooth and fast all day. Sunny weather gave way to high cloud and moderate wind in the afternoon preceding the current frontal system.

According to predictions light to moderate snow showers should continue today and tomorrow before receding on Sunday. More snow is expected on Monday and another dump is due starting New Years day.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report

It’s a white Christmas in Nozawa Onsen this morning with 10-15cm falling across the mountain since last lifts yesterday. Combined with the totals received over the preceding hours, skiing conditions should be very nice indeed.

Currently, the weather is partly cloudy and should clear completely at some point during the afternoon. Winds are light at the summit. Top picks on the mountain today are the Yamabiko trees for off piste action, while the groomed runs such as Skyline for intermediate to advanced riders or Paradise for beginners are also in fine form.

Likewise, yesterday was another good day on the hill. The snow continued to fall throughout the day at light to moderate levels and crowds were kept thin with the cold and wind.

As suggested in the forecast yesterday, we are still expecting a decent dump of Japan powder beginning tomorrow night and persisting till at least Saturday afternoon. The fresh snow should be light and dry with the freezing line dropping to sea level.

From all at Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort we wish everyone a very merry Christmas. Enjoy your day.

Just one month to go

Autumn in Nozawa Red White and Blue by Shige

With just one month to go until the resort is set to open here in Nozawa Onsen on December 3rd, there is a cool feeling of excitement in the air.

The autumn leaves or Kouyo are in full blaze, and there are some beautiful colors sprawled out across the slopes

The staff as usual are out in the fields preparing the runs, cutting grass and trees to make way for mountains of snow which are hopefully just around the corner.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has put out their forecast and it is looking pretty promising with average temperature and precipitation in December and below average temps in January.

At the moment it is still fairly warm in town but temps are set to drop next week and get down to -5 degrees up top of Mt Kenashi. Anyway, still early days.

The Nozawa Onsen Photo contest is on again and will be chosen at the end of November so if have any good shots of Nozawa be sure to send them in. You can enter here http://www.nozawaphoto.com/

If you struggle with the language you can post here http://www.facebook.com/nozawaonsenjapan and your entry will be sent on – or you can do both

Some great prizes to be won including lift Passes and accommodation plus the prestige of your photo being displayed around the village

Anyway probably getting close to time to pull out the boards and start waxing if nothing else will get you thinking of the winter wonderland ahead…
