Nozawa Onsen Weather: Isolated snow showers.

Nozawa Snow Report 28 December 2013

Its a real mixed bag in Nozawa Onsen this morning. We are experiencing isolated light snow showers, interspersed with patches of blue sky and sun. Temperatures are very cold; -11C at Yamabiko. Since the close of lifts yesterday we have had 10cm of snowfall on the upper mountain and 5cm across the lower reaches.

Those on the mountain yesterday really scored, especially during the afternoon when consistent moderate to heavy snow showers moved over the resort. The best area was the Yamabiko trees during times of low vis, and the groomed runs were nice during breaks in the cloud.

It definitely appeared that this current system was delayed by about six hours with the heaviest falls experienced during the afternoon, not the morning as forecast.

We expect isolated snow showers to continue today, increasing slightly overnight, then gradually receding over the coming days. At this time, a solid dump is possible on the night of new years day, although this forecast is subject to changes. Until then, light snow showers should continue on and off.

Nozawa Snow Report: Another 60cm dump overnight twice what was forecast

Matt drew back in the pow self portrait

The snow is getting a bit out of control in Nozawa Onsen. We had about 30cm forecast for last night, we ended up getting at least twice that amount with over 60cm falling since yesterday afternoon.

For the locals who continually have to clear it off their roofs and roads it is hard work, for the powder hounds it is heaven. It started yesterday afternoon and fell heavy all night. We cleared about 40cm off the car park at midnight and it was light, kind of like foam at the beach. Then when we woke up there was another 30cm waiting for us.

With the fire festival on tomorrow should be a fairly busy weekend but the lift lines were almost non-existent today. Some people may be a bit scared off by the state of the roads, anyone coming up will want winter tires and a 4WD or may even need chains so take it easy on the roads.

Yesterday was a big day for the Fire Festival guys as they got the trees down in preparation for the big event they will be building today and tomorrow in preparation at the festival grounds so well worth a look.

The weather outlook is still for some clearer skies ahead over the next few days, which we are kind of glad to see. Then the snow marks are appearing again from Friday on so we are in a sweet spot in Nozawa and hope to see you up sometime.

Getting ready to fire up

Just one month to go

Autumn in Nozawa Red White and Blue by Shige

With just one month to go until the resort is set to open here in Nozawa Onsen on December 3rd, there is a cool feeling of excitement in the air.

The autumn leaves or Kouyo are in full blaze, and there are some beautiful colors sprawled out across the slopes

The staff as usual are out in the fields preparing the runs, cutting grass and trees to make way for mountains of snow which are hopefully just around the corner.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has put out their forecast and it is looking pretty promising with average temperature and precipitation in December and below average temps in January.

At the moment it is still fairly warm in town but temps are set to drop next week and get down to -5 degrees up top of Mt Kenashi. Anyway, still early days.

The Nozawa Onsen Photo contest is on again and will be chosen at the end of November so if have any good shots of Nozawa be sure to send them in. You can enter here http://www.nozawaphoto.com/

If you struggle with the language you can post here http://www.facebook.com/nozawaonsenjapan and your entry will be sent on – or you can do both

Some great prizes to be won including lift Passes and accommodation plus the prestige of your photo being displayed around the village

Anyway probably getting close to time to pull out the boards and start waxing if nothing else will get you thinking of the winter wonderland ahead…
