Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 11 January 2016: A good week ahead for Nozawa Onsen

Base at top: 100 cm
Temp at top: -9 Degrees
Base at Uenotaira: 95 cm
New snow since close: 8 cm
Weather: Snowing

Nozawa Onsen was treated to another beautiful day out on the slopes yesterday with decent coverage, particularly at the higher altitudes. The colder temperatures kept the snow fresh, but with large crowds here over the long weekend, the snow was chopped up relatively quickly. Today is a holiday for the Japanese to celebrate “coming of age”, so the mountain once again will be quite busy.

There is, however, fresh snow in the resort with 8 cm having fallen up the top overnight. The pistes should be nice and soft and the cold temperatures and lack of sun should keep it that way for a while.

This coming week could be a good one at Nozawa Onsen, with snow expected to be falling at some point every day for the week. The snow falls don’t look like they’ll be very heavy, but with consistent dumps this could bring our base up quite a bit.

Enjoy the coming week and stay safe out there in this busy period!

Yesterday began with some light clouds hanging around in the skies after a nice fresh cover of the good stuff. The afternoon brought with it some beautiful blue skies and sun. The conditions stayed nice throughout the day, however there unfortunately isn’t enough snow yet for some parts of the mountain to be open.

The next few days seem like they should bring some of the snow we’ve been needing, with consistent snow predicted to fall from tonight until Tuesday, and more again falling even heavier later in the week. The warm temperatures that we witnessed late last week are no more and the cold temperatures will be sticking around for as far as we can tell. hopefully the cold temperatures and cloudy skies will reward us!

Weather: clear up the top, cloudy in village

With a fresh 25cm covering the resort yesterday, everyone’s spirits are up and we’re all happy to have some more fresh snow. The base now sits at 100cm up the top and 95cm at Uenotaira.

With the sun shining up the top, we can expect a beautiful day to begin with followed by relatively cold temperatures and some good cloud formations over the resort in the afternoon. Later in the day snow should start falling right down to the village and will continue through the night and tomorrow. Temperatures will continue to drop and will be coldest on monday, with moderate winds in effect. Take the wind chill factor into account because it’s going to be cold and dry, but there’ll be plenty of snow coming on sunday and monday!

The next few days are looking exciting for us here at Nozawa Onsen. After having a slow start to the season with less snow than we expected, we should be in for a treat over the next few days. Tomorrow should bring us a fair amount of snow right down to the village and it won’t be melting away with temperatures staying below -2 degrees at the base and around -5 up the top.

Looking further ahead it seems like Friday night could be the start of the big dump which will continue throughout Saturday. It won’t be stopping just there… Sunday night looks like it’ll ensure us another top up of snow so it would be wise to start prepping the powder skis!

Weather: Clear! Bluebird day.

No fresh snow to report yet in the New Year, but we’ve had some fantastic bluebird days, and today is no different. The sun’s out and the temperatures are mild. There’s still some good snow coverage keeping the majority of our runs open. The terrain park is taking shape as of yesterday and so far has a rail, box and a small kicker.

This sunny scene looks like it should all change pretty soon! A nice storm should be settling over Nozawa to deliver us the goods from mid week. Temperatures will be dropping again and it looks like the snow’s going to stick around with snow predicted for every day from Tuesday onwards.
So make the most of the beautiful skies which are expected for today and tomorrow before the clouds begin to form and snow starts dumping…

Hope you all have a great day out on the slopes in this beautiful sunshine.

Weather: snowy!

One great day followed by another great day. Yesterday was a beautiful bluebird day out on the slopes, with promising clouds starting to form as the lifts were closing. the clouds definitely delivered and we woke up to a big big dump of 35cm up top and an equally large dump in the village. We were all walking to the lifts in knee deep powder.

The snow is still falling heavily and there’s going to be a lot more for the rest of the day. Finally the day has come here at Nozawa Onsen. The rest of the week is looking nice with some smaller dumps for a couple of days into the New Year.

The fresh snow is still quite loose and visibility is limited so choose your tracks wisely and ride together. Have a blast out there!

Weather; Sunny!

The snow didn’t stop falling yesterday; we received a welcome dump of snow covering all the rooves and trees, and most importantly on the runs. The temperatures were cold and the visibility wasn’t great, but the on piste conditions were fantastic. The snow stopped in the late evening and temperatures stayed cold both up top and in the village so the snow is still nice and soft.

Today’s looking like it’ll be a beautiful morning with some clouds forming in the late afternoon. Snow should start falling soon after and temperatures will fall once again as the system starts to take shape over Nozawa Onsen.

Heavy snow is on its way and the powder days are upon us with more snow to come and the base getting deeper. A nice 30cm is expected over the next 24 hours. The mountain is quite busy at the moment with Japanese schools on holidays, so let’s share the runs and try to avoid any accidents! Safe riding!

Weather: Sun creeping through the clouds

A beautiful day of blue skies yesterday left us feeling bittersweet. It was awesome to see the sun but we were all hoping for more snow.  Luckily, it’s been snowing overnight and we woke up to 15cm of fresh up the top and nearly 15 in the village too. Since lifts opening this morning we’ve already received another 5cm. The snow doesn’t look like it’ll be stopping any time soon either. the snow should become lighter in the afternoon but we’ll still be receiving some more in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks like it’ll be a beautiful up on the slopes, with clear skies for the morning before clouding over in the late afternoon and dumping 16 cm overnight. We’re in for a good week to come and a good start to the new year if this weather system keeps progressing over the next couple of days.

Now that the snow is starting to build up, the tree runs are becoming more and more and more tempting. Make the right decisions and keep yourself safe on the mountain!

Nozawa Onsen Snow report 26 December 2015

Yesterday’s conditions were quite icy but some snow started falling in the afternoon. It started snowing in the village later in the afternoon and has been falling most of the night. The village has a nice light coating of snow and the top has a fresh 15cm.

The future is looking good with fresh snow forecast for the next four days. We should be getting around 10cm a day. Wednesday looks like it’ll be a beautiful clear day to make the most of the fresh snow. Temperatures at the top won’t be getting above -4 so all the fresh snow should settle nicely. Tomorrow will be an incredibly chilly day with temperatures not getting above -10 and a wind chill factor of -24. Stay warm!!

As for the village the temperature will be hovering between -5 and 0 degrees, with snow continuing to fall over the next couple of days.

Here’s a few shots from on the mountain yesterday:

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are keen to get out there and test out any new gear!

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 20 December 2015

Blue Skies and Low Temps

The lifts started turning yesterday at Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort and we received a steady falling of snow throughout the day. Day two up on the slopes is going to be a good one with blue skies all around and no wind. It’s not going to get above zero so it will still be fresh up top.

The next few days are looking okay with a couple of small showers forecast over the week before a predicted large dump over christmas. This should get us into the christmas spirit.

The opening of Gondola Cafe was a big success. The Cafe also serves as a meeting point for Nozawa Holidays’ lessons so don’t hesitate to grab a hot drink or a bite to eat before you hit the slopes!

Once again stay safe and make the most of the beautiful weather today!
