Nozawa Snow Report 4 January 2016

Base at top: 85 cm
Temp at top: 1 degree
Base at Uenotaira: 80 cm
New snow since close: 0 cm
Weather: Clear! Bluebird day

Following yesterday’s beautiful blue skies it looks today will be pretty similar again. Tomorrow the temperatures start to drop again and snow should start falling in the evening. Wednesday looks like it’ll clear up a little before a big storm begins to move in on Thursday. Things are looking like they only get better from there with heavy snow predicted for all of Saturday. Temperatures will be staying low throughout the week which is welcome news after these warm past two days.

Current conditions up on the mountain are not fantastic; There is some grass and shrub exposure and a few sections have unfortunately had to be closed off due to a lack of snow coverage, although there are still some good spots around The Japanese school holidays are over as of today so the mountain should be far less busy from today onwards.

Stay safe up there and enjoy the blue skies!

Base at Uenotaira: 95 cm

Weather: relatively clear, some clouds

After yesterday’s fresh coating of 20cm, everyone was out to get their first tracks of the year.
Great to see a nice little dump for the first day of the year and we are eagerly waiting for some more. It has allowed the Resort to open up a couple more runs. Skyline opened yesterday afternoon after being freshly groomed. the conditions were great at the top but moving lower down the snow started to become more icy and rough. Still, this long run provides amazing views and a direct course back to the village from the top.

The next few days are not showing much new snow on the radar and slightly warmer temperatures. However the extended forecast looks like a substantial storm will be hovering over Nozawa in the second half of next week. There should be a bit to get us started on Tuesday, then consistent snow from Thursday through till Sunday, and possibly beyond. Could this storm bring us the dump we’ve all been waiting for?

Hope you all had a great start to the new year, stay safe and enjoy your time in Nozawa

Current Mountain Conditons:

Base at top: 90 cm

Temp at top: -9 degrees

Base at Uenotaira: 80 cm

New snow since close: 5 cm

Weather; Snowy! possible sun in the afternoon

Yesterday we saw snow falling until early afternoon before the sun started to peek through the clouds. The conditions are improving and there are some great runs out there. Others are still a bit icy and exposed however we’re hoping that all changes soon.

The base is now at 90cm and tonight could be the night we break the one meter mark. We should be waking up to a fresh 17cm across the whole mountain. Looking into the future there isn’t a whole lot of snow predicted for the first few days of the New Year but we should be getting some smaller accumulations throughout the week.

Celebrations for tonight include Traditional Japanese New Year blessings at the Nozawa Onsen Shrine, or night skiing just next to the base of Nagasaka Gondola with free sake or mulled wine.

A big thanks to all the staff, guests, and locals who have made 2015 a successful year at Nozawa Onsen, and here’s to a great year ahead!

Two sleeps ’til Christmas

Base at top: 50 cm
Temp at Top; -2 Degrees
Base at Uenotaira 45 cm
New Snow since close: 5 cm
Weather; Sun creeping through the clouds

The cool and cloudy conditions of yesterday kept the snow steadily falling at higher altitudes. The base is looking nice and the saplings and grass roots on the slopes have practically all disappeared. We received another 5cm up top yesterday so get out on those groomers for a bit of fresh snow!

Down in the village there was some rain which has unfortunately washed away most of the surrounding snow. Snow should start falling on Christmas Eve though so we’re hoping to wake up to a white Christmas! The snow will continue falling throughout Christmas Day and Boxing Day, being heaviest during the nights.

Hopefully after this dump we’ll be able to ski back down to the resort. Fingers crossed!

Weather: cloudy and foggy

Yesterday was cloudy up the top but wasn’t as cold as it looked. I think that we’ll be grateful for the capsule chairlifts soon once it starts getting really cold. There was consistent moderate snow through yesterday afternoon which added a little bit more to our base and kept the slopes a bit softer throughout the day. We woke up to rain in the village this morning but looking up to the mountains  we can see the snow line at about 300m above the village. The report is showing 15cm of fresh overnight up top.

We’re expecting a nice three days of snowfall starting on Christmas Eve and getting heavier towards boxing day evening. The total over the three days is looking like it’ll be around 56cm! The extended forecast looks like it’ll clear up after the 27th but stay cold for the following couple of days.

Stay warm over the coming days!

Weather: Cloudy

Day two on the slopes was fantastic. Lots of people were out riding under the beautiful blue skies from first lift until the end of the day. It’s bittersweet when there’s a day like that; it’s great weather for riding but I think we’re all hoping for more snow.

Today, There will be some light snow throughout. We’re looking at around 8cm in the afternoon and night, and then a few days down the track we’ll be getting a massive dump for Christmas! A hefty system looks like it’ll be forming on Friday night and will be leaving its mark on Saturday, with an expected dump of 33cm on the Saturday alone. Lucky us! Temperatures are going to be getting very cold over Christmas, down to -14 at the top.

For the time being, there are a number of runs open, some with better coverage than others. A few bits of grass and plants are exposed in parts so keep an eye out for them.

Stay safe out there and enjoy the mild conditions before it gets freezing!

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 19 December 2015

The Grand Opening.

The lifts here at Nozawa Onsen will be opening today! Thanks to a generous snow fall overnight on Thursday and a nice fresh coating of 15cm in the early hours of this morning, the snow depth now sits at 40cm at the top. Yamabiko lift will be open and the runs that stem from there will be open. It’s still snowing quite heavily and looks like visibility won’t be perfect so keep your eyes up.

We’re expecting another 11cm throughout the day and some clearer conditions this afternoon, so get out there if you can for the first runs of the season. Everyone here is over the moon that we can open our lifts and we’re excited to see everyone out there enjoying themselves.

Gondola Cafe will be open and is a great cosy place to stay warm when you aren’t on the slopes. The cafe is located opposite Nagasaka Gondola in the Mt Dock Shop.

Stay safe out there and start tearing up the slopes!Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 19 December 2015

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 17 December 2015

Snow is in the air!

It’s always exciting to wake up and see snow falling outside, and this morning we were blessed with the first lot of predicted snow. The trees have begun to turn white and we can see a nice base starting to develop on the slopes at Nozawa Ski Resort. A few of the guests have already got into the spirit and this morning we witnessed the first snowball fight of the season.

There’s more snow to come throughout the day, particularly up the top of the resort. It’s looking like it will be an exciting couple of days to come with some more snow showers predicted and the expected opening of the resort by the weekend. The village farmers are finishing up their work for the season just as the skiers and boarders are preparing for theirs. Stay tuned to keep up with the transition into a real winter here at Nozawa Onsen.

Nowaza Onsen Snow Report 15 December 2015

Tonight is the night!

Nozawa Onsen is expecting the good stuff to start falling tonight. A few centimeters to begin with and it won’t be stopping until Thursday. Thursday is looking like the big day with plenty of snow dumping throughout the whole day. Some more again is predicted for the weekend. We are hoping to open our lifts on Friday. Everyone here is tapping their fingers in anticipation and the snow angels seem to be on our side. It looks like it’ll be a cold day on Thursday with a maximum of negative seven degrees, so stay warm!!

Neobar opened last night, which was a huge success. Guests, staff, and locals all enjoyed themselves and got to know each other, and the DJ kept everyone entertained with some smooth music.

Here’s hoping we wake up to snow piling up tomorrow morning!

The powder has arrived!

The Game changer in Nozawa. Powder Season has arrived!Base up top: 150 cm Temperature; -10 Degrees
Base at bottom; 55 cm
New Snow: 60 cm Weather; Dumping

Most years we have a system that rolls thru and changes the landscape pretty quickly. We get a lot of snow in a short period of time, which usually sets us up for the season and means the start of the powder season. With a massive 60cm dump overnight and looks like 60cm more on the way this is our game changer for this season. Some seasons we are just opening around this time so knee to waist deep powder is pretty amazing in early December. We cleared the steps 4 times yesterday and still woke up to 20cm on the doorstep! Anyway time to strap on the powder boards for a bit of R & D. Will keep you posted….
