Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 25 January 2014

At the moment in Nozawa Onsen we have some high clouds drifting over the resort preceding the cold front we expect to move across the region later tonight. Temperatures are warm, but not as warm as expected. The whole mountain was below freezing overnight so conditions will be firm and fast, before softening later in the afternoon.

Best runs today will be the groomers and the park will also be worth a look. The remaining areas of in bounds powder became tracked out yesterday. However there are still a few stashes on the north facing slopes in the backcountry. Only those who are well equipped and experienced should head outside the resort.

Yesterday was better than expected. Pefrect bluebird and excellent atmospheric clarity delivered views of the Sea of Japan. Even the Hakuba range was visible in the morning before light afternoon haze moved over. Temperatures warmed during the afternoon but Yamabiko and north facing slopes held up well and delivered great top to bottom powder runs. South facing slopes were roasted in the sun, became heavy before developing a crust layer. Groomed runs were nice as always.

Looking at the forecast ahead we should see cold conditions return overnight in combination with light to moderate snowfalls which are set to continue until tomorrow night. Monday looks like it will be mostly clear before further light to moderate snowfalls pass over on Tuesday.

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report 12 January 2014

A semi bluebird morning here in Nozawa Onsen. We have some light cumulus clouds hovering around delivering the occasional snow shower. Since the close of lifts 5cm of fresh has fallen on the upper slopes and a dusting recorded down lower. Visibility is very good across all elevations.

Best riding today will be had all over the mountain from a snow quality standpoint. But head to the quieter areas of the resort to escape the crowds on this long weekend Sunday. Be careful in the backcountry as snowpack stability is still a concern after the recent dump.

Yesterday was one of the better days of the season. The powder had settled and consolidated so was much easier to ride although not as deep as the day before, a good chance to explore the excellent Nozawa Onsen tree runs. Visibility was marginal in the morning but improved during the day.

Current predictions indicate a strong dump will occur tonight with snow continuing tomorrow. Its likely we should receive 30cm, possibly more, of fresh over the next 24 hours. Light snow will continue into Tuesday before clearing to bluebird conditions on Wednesday.

Nozawa Snow Report 2 January 2014

It’s dumping in Nozawa Onsen! The heavily anticipated first flakes began to fall late yesterday afternoon and increased into the night. We have had 20cm fall up top and 15cm in the village, although these readings were taken at 7am, its likely that twice as much has fallen since then. Temperatures are colder than yesterday with a freezing level of around 600m. Winds are strong across the mountain so be prepared for very cold windchill and wind hold on some lifts.

Seek out tree lined runs for protection from the winds and improved visibility in the fog, its certain that there will be some sweet powder stashes amongst the trees, especially the upper half of the mountain. If its cruisy groomed runs your after the lower areas will be the pick, as they are below the cloud line.

There were more than a few sore heads yesterday morning although those who made the effort to get up were rewarded with some nice runs down the groomers. The upper trees were nice also but well tracked. Lower un-groomed runs suffered with warmer than expected temperatures.

The forecast suggests moderate to heavy falls should continue this morning before gradually abating into the afternoon. Winds should decrease into the afternoon also. Tomorrow should be an epic day with deep freshies and clear skies. Further moderate falls are expected to move across the region tomorrow night. Following that, more snow is expected next Monday.

Last Nozawa Onsen Snow Report of the Season

The weather in Nozawa Onsen is unreal – almost like February at times. Hardly anyone on the mountain this morning. Almost feels like a private ski resort at times. Still great snow conditions on and off the slopes. If you know the right spots you can even still find nice powder runs. After a few snowy days and a blue sky yesterday the temperatures are on the rise a bit today. But still good fun to carve down Skyline towards the village and get a few turns in at the slushy bottom part.

Fantastic day yesterday. Fresh powder and blue sky is a mix which is hard to beat. A lot of people did not want to miss out and made their way up to Nozawa to enjoy skiing once more this season. Temperatures stayed fairly cold up top and guaranteed good snow condition all day long. Got a bit slushy at the bottom in the afternoon. But all in all could not ask for a better day.

The forecast shows a blue sky tomorrow and some rain for Wednesday. Should not affect us too much, there is still plenty of snow on the mountain. Nozawa are keeping a really big area of the resort open, in fact most of the main runs really and you can still ski from top to bottom.

Apart from that we’ve decided to close the Nozawa Onsen Snow Report out today. Not that, as you can see above, that’s any reflection of the snow quality in Nozawa.  It’s been an awesome season but the weather is only getting warmer from here by the looks of it and the skiers much less.

We’ll be updating occasionally over the off season with videos and pics from this season so if you have one you’d like to contribute please do so on our Facebook page. Otherwise see you all next season in Nozawa Onsen!

Nozawa Snow Report: Welcome the sun

Finally a burst of sun for a very content slide home

Has been a while but yesterday afternoon the sun burst on to the stage to create a magic day on the slopes.

With a 420cm base, a good overnight dump and very few crowds the stage was set for perfection. Snow conditions were excellent under foot on the groomers and up on the slopes of Yamabiko there was even a good coverage of powder that remained untouched for most of the morning.

Had some snow last night but the sun is out again this morning so should be another amazing day. Visibility is looking pretty good up top too so a chance to take a good look around.

The clearing of snow continues in the Village, the roofs are lined with people doing their best to take some of the weight off. Trucks and shovels are going hard below to take it away. A big ‘otsukaresama’ and well done to everyone in town for their efforts in the extreme conditions we have experienced.

The outlook is for more snowy days ahead. Not as heavy as was previously expected but still consistent good moderate

Rain, hale or 400cm of snow he will deliver
