After two relatively clear days in Nozawa Onsen people were wondering where the snow is! Today it has returned, not real heavy but spurts of decent falls and already about 15cm has collected. Winter magic awaits in Nozawa but some can’t wai Winter magic awaits in Nozawa but some can’t wait :)
Local gun skier Shogo Kawano has done it again this year — first tracks of the ski season in Nozawa Onsen!
Very marginal conditions with the dusting the other day but it was all he needed to be the first to get up there and make a turn or two. Temps have been up and down a bit with some chilly days and some nice Autumn warmth when the sun comes out.
The forecast is looking interesting — around 15cm of fresh snow expected tomorrow for the top, and with the Ocean still warm, we could be in for some heavy early-season falls thanks to that lake-effect magic, ❄️🌊 have to wait and see. Some nice low pressure systems pushing in some good swell over the weekend. The Million Yen question that we often get asked. When will the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort Open?
The Ski resort will usually try and open on the last weekend of November if there is enough snow or it is cold enough for snow making as we have the Snow Making Machines now. But after 30 years of snow seasons in Nozawa all I can tell you is it varies. On average I would say it opens around December 10th. Some years earlier some later.

First Snow of the winter for Nozawa Onsen! ❄️ First Snow of the winter for Nozawa Onsen! ❄️
Exciting news — we’ve had our first dusting of snow up top here in Nozawa Onsen! Just a light touch-up as temps hit freezing point yesterday morning. It’s always magical to see the contrast of fresh white snow against the rich autumn colours. Mt Myoko across the valley, sitting a little higher, also received a good blanket — though we haven’t had a proper look yet with the cloud cover.
A humble beginning, but after a long, hot summer, it feels great to see winter finally on the way! The ski resort team has been busy preparing the slopes and lifts, and if the snow gods are kind, we could actually open in exactly one month from today — November 29th. Fingers crossed, and feel free to start your best snow dance. 🕺
Now’s the time to lock in your snow services for the coming season — everything from ski lessons and rentals to transfers and lift passes.
⏰ Busy periods are already filling fast, so make sure you don’t miss out!

❄️ Snow Forecast 2025–26 Winter – Nozawa O ❄️ Snow Forecast 2025–26 Winter – Nozawa Onsen ❄️
The countdown to winter has begun in Nozawa Onsen!
Early forecasts are pointing to another cold and snowy season ahead, with long-range models suggesting slightly above-average snowfall and below-average temperatures from December through February. Perfect conditions for deep powder days and that classic Nozawa magic. After a warm autumn, the chill is already setting in across Nagano, and locals are getting their skis waxed and snow shovels ready. The first snowfalls are expected on the upper slopes of Mt. Kenashi around late November, with the official resort opening planned for the last weekend of November (snow permitting).

🍂 Autumn in Nozawa Onsen, Nagano 🍂 As summer 🍂 Autumn in Nozawa Onsen, Nagano 🍂
As summer fades, Nozawa Onsen transforms into one of Nagano’s most beautiful autumn escapes. The hills around the village glow in deep reds and golds, and the air turns crisp and calm — perfect for exploring and unwinding.
Stroll through the old streets lined with steaming onsens and maple trees, or take the Nagasaka Gondola up Mt. Kenashi for sweeping views of the autumn colours below. A visit to nearby Lake Hokuryuko offers mirror-like reflections of the mountains and foliage — stunning at sunrise. After a walk or hike, soak in one of Nozawa’s 13 free public hot springs, then warm up with a bowl of soba or mushroom hotpot made from local ingredients.
Autumn in Nozawa is slower, quieter, and full of simple pleasures — the kind that stay with you long after you’ve left. This footage is from nearby Norikura Kogen a week ago but the top of Nozawa os also starting to change and a cold front is on its way in a few days Book accommodation instantly here; https://www.nozawaholidays.com/availability/ 📍 Best time to visit: Early October – Mid November
