Nozawa Snow Report 9 February 2016: Overview

After a beautiful and mild bluebird day on the slopes yesterday, the skies are looking much cloudier today. The forecast is telling us that we may see between 25-30cm of snow today, though there are still some blue patches in the sky and no sign of snowflakes yet. Our fingers are crossed! Winds will be picking up fairly fast today to reach speeds of 55 km/h. We won’t feel it so much in the village, but up the top it’s going to be cold and windy today. The strong winds may continue into Wednesday as well, hopefully not blowing away any fresh snow that’s landed. Thursday is looking much like yesterday, blue skies all around. Who’s looking forward to another bluebird day?

Although it’s still four days away, The weekend isn’t looking too exciting, with temperatures rising above zero and some rain predicted to fall. Hopefully the snowpack will hold strong through the warmer temps as there is a nice lot of snow predicted to come after the weekend once the temperatures drop.

Yesterday began with some light clouds hanging around in the skies after a nice fresh cover of the good stuff. The afternoon brought with it some beautiful blue skies and sun. The conditions stayed nice throughout the day, however there unfortunately isn’t enough snow yet for some parts of the mountain to be open.

The next few days seem like they should bring some of the snow we’ve been needing, with consistent snow predicted to fall from tonight until Tuesday, and more again falling even heavier later in the week. The warm temperatures that we witnessed late last week are no more and the cold temperatures will be sticking around for as far as we can tell. hopefully the cold temperatures and cloudy skies will reward us!

With a fresh 25cm covering the resort yesterday, everyone’s spirits are up and we’re all happy to have some more fresh snow. The base now sits at 100cm up the top and 95cm at Uenotaira.

With the sun shining up the top, we can expect a beautiful day to begin with followed by relatively cold temperatures and some good cloud formations over the resort in the afternoon. Later in the day snow should start falling right down to the village and will continue through the night and tomorrow. Temperatures will continue to drop and will be coldest on monday, with moderate winds in effect. Take the wind chill factor into account because it’s going to be cold and dry, but there’ll be plenty of snow coming on sunday and monday!

The next few days are looking exciting for us here at Nozawa Onsen. After having a slow start to the season with less snow than we expected, we should be in for a treat over the next few days. Tomorrow should bring us a fair amount of snow right down to the village and it won’t be melting away with temperatures staying below -2 degrees at the base and around -5 up the top.

Looking further ahead it seems like Friday night could be the start of the big dump which will continue throughout Saturday. It won’t be stopping just there… Sunday night looks like it’ll ensure us another top up of snow so it would be wise to start prepping the powder skis!

Weather: Clear! Bluebird day.

No fresh snow to report yet in the New Year, but we’ve had some fantastic bluebird days, and today is no different. The sun’s out and the temperatures are mild. There’s still some good snow coverage keeping the majority of our runs open. The terrain park is taking shape as of yesterday and so far has a rail, box and a small kicker.

This sunny scene looks like it should all change pretty soon! A nice storm should be settling over Nozawa to deliver us the goods from mid week. Temperatures will be dropping again and it looks like the snow’s going to stick around with snow predicted for every day from Tuesday onwards.
So make the most of the beautiful skies which are expected for today and tomorrow before the clouds begin to form and snow starts dumping…

Hope you all have a great day out on the slopes in this beautiful sunshine.

After yesterday’s fresh coating of 20cm, everyone was out to get their first tracks of the year.
Great to see a nice little dump for the first day of the year and we are eagerly waiting for some more. It has allowed the Resort to open up a couple more runs. Skyline opened yesterday afternoon after being freshly groomed. the conditions were great at the top but moving lower down the snow started to become more icy and rough. Still, this long run provides amazing views and a direct course back to the village from the top.

The next few days are not showing much new snow on the radar and slightly warmer temperatures. However the extended forecast looks like a substantial storm will be hovering over Nozawa in the second half of next week. There should be a bit to get us started on Tuesday, then consistent snow from Thursday through till Sunday, and possibly beyond. Could this storm bring us the dump we’ve all been waiting for?

Hope you all had a great start to the new year, stay safe and enjoy your time in Nozawa

Weather; Snowy! possible sun in the afternoon

Yesterday we saw snow falling until early afternoon before the sun started to peek through the clouds. The conditions are improving and there are some great runs out there. Others are still a bit icy and exposed however we’re hoping that all changes soon.

The base is now at 90cm and tonight could be the night we break the one meter mark. We should be waking up to a fresh 17cm across the whole mountain. Looking into the future there isn’t a whole lot of snow predicted for the first few days of the New Year but we should be getting some smaller accumulations throughout the week.

Celebrations for tonight include Traditional Japanese New Year blessings at the Nozawa Onsen Shrine, or night skiing just next to the base of Nagasaka Gondola with free sake or mulled wine.

A big thanks to all the staff, guests, and locals who have made 2015 a successful year at Nozawa Onsen, and here’s to a great year ahead!

Weather: snowy!

One great day followed by another great day. Yesterday was a beautiful bluebird day out on the slopes, with promising clouds starting to form as the lifts were closing. the clouds definitely delivered and we woke up to a big big dump of 35cm up top and an equally large dump in the village. We were all walking to the lifts in knee deep powder.

The snow is still falling heavily and there’s going to be a lot more for the rest of the day. Finally the day has come here at Nozawa Onsen. The rest of the week is looking nice with some smaller dumps for a couple of days into the New Year.

The fresh snow is still quite loose and visibility is limited so choose your tracks wisely and ride together. Have a blast out there!

Nozawa Onsen Snow Report: Good day for an Onsen

Base up top: 380 cm                  Temperature; 0 Degrees

Base at bottom; 280 cm

New Snow: 10 cm up top

If you are considering a day off then today may be your day. Bad news is it is raining in the Village at the moment, has been most of the night. Rain on a ski trip is a bit like rain on your wedding day, never a great thing! Good news is that they are reporting snow up top 10cm since close of lifts. Also freezing levels are set to drop from tonight and moderate snowfalls should follow!

The other good news is it is one of the first days of the season we have not had to shovel buckets of fresh snow to get the car out!

Yesterday was a great day on the mountain with lots of sunshine in the morning and then the clouds rolled in later in the day. Was a clear day so made for some good photos

Anyway, good day to get into one of the 13 free Onsens in town. If you go to the Tourist information office you can get a book and if you go to all 13 Onsens can score a free bandana. Otherwise there are a number of private ones to explore including the new Furusato which has an outdoor onsen and Arena where you can also get a bite to eat at the restaurant or get a massage to ease those mountain aches!

Nozawa Snow Report: Reached the 3 meter base mark in Nozawa this morning

Kawaharu Yu Onsen cold meets hot in Nozawa Onsen

Wooo! We have dived into the 300cm mark in Nozawa Onsen officially today. Happened a little quicker than I thought as yet again last night we received close to 30cm on the slopes!

It seems like a given to wake up with a solid dump of new snow on the doorstep. Checked back a few years for base at around this time and the average has been about 190cm so we are well above that now. 2010 we were at similar levels and in 2006 we had a whopping 475cm!

Today is relatively clear compared to the past few days, but still snowing! Just lightly in the village at the moment but snow clouds are still hovering.

Yesterday on the mountain was another great day and I am running out of superlatives to describe it. 30cm of fresh and it snowed pretty heavy most of the day.

We should be in for snow showers over the next few days then another good dump starting Tuesday night. The snow is deep so choose your line carefully and take a big breath!
