Luckily the forecast rain has avoided us in Nozawa Onsen so far, let’s hope it stays that way. At present we have some light snow falling across the mountain. It’s not too cold either so the snow is relatively wet. Look for the awesome ice trees at the top of the mountain today as conditions are ideal for these to form. Winds will remain light all day and crowd levels are definitely smaller than over the weekend.
Yesterday we had beautiful clear conditions accompanied with cold temperatures. With the snowfalls the night before it was pretty much a perfect day in Nozawa. The snow remained in pristine shape all day and even with the weekend crowds it was still possible to find untracked areas in the afternoon.
We should see the freezing level drop from around 1000m to below sea level overnight and that classic Japan powder will be expected once again tomorrow.
Looking further ahead we still expect an extended period to snow over the next week or so. In fact this is one of the best forecasts we have seen in quite a while. Cold temperatures and light to moderate snowfalls are set to remain until Tuesday next week without a break. We also expect a bout of heavy snows and strong winds on Sunday. All in all it’s hard to imagine a better forecast for the next week or so, unless you are a fair weather skier.
