Beautiful afternoon light and skiing

Nozawa Snow Report 12 March 2017: Overview

Today we have some brisk sunshine sweeping across the Nagano plains. The winds are light and cold overnight temperatures have ensured that the snow from yesterday has remained in excellent condition. Although most areas are tracked thanks to the weekend crowds there will be a few pockets of untracked powder through the trees. Expect the day to warm later on as we come under the influence of a light southerly airflow.

Yesterday was certainly the best day of spring so far. Although it was crowded as expected for a clear, snowy Saturday, the snow was sensational. Deep powder across the resort that remained in excellent condition thanks to only patchy sunshine and drifting clouds. It definitely still felt like winter across the resort.

Nozawa Snow Report 12 March 2017: Forecast

If this week is anything to go by then next week will be another cracker. After the warm spell over the next two days snowfalls will resume and look to be downright heavy on Wednesday. I wouldn’t be suprised if 30-40cm falls on this day. Following this snowfalls will continue into the second half of the week becoming lighter in intensity over time and eventually clearing by next weekend.

Nozawa Snow Report 11 March 2017: Overview

The base is edging back upwards brushing against the four meter mark up top once again. Its the winter that keeps on giving with 20cm recorded since last lifts yesterday, 10cm down in the village. The temperatures are pretty cold too, a brisk morning on the Nozawa streets and -7c at the top. There will be plenty of powder pockets today and it shows that the mountain will be fairly competitive with numerous boards and skis in line at 7am. This is a great overnight snowfall for March and I expect excellent conditions across the mountain.

Yesterday continued on the trend of excellent skiing this March. We were suprised that even though there was only 5cm or so recorded, it felt much deeper than this. Perhaps the slopes were filled in by the wind? It snowed lightly during the morning before the clouds parted at around 11am. We were left with great powder snow all day as the sun shone down on the mountain. Later in the afternoon more clouds rolled over bringing the snowfalls we are impacted by today.

Nozawa Snow Report 11 March 2017: Forecast

Tomorrow it’ll be mostly sunny with light winds and fairly warm temperatures. A spring day of skiing. On Monday, cloudy slightly warmer temps still with snowfalls starting from later afternoon. Wednesday next week is looking to be pretty impressive with NW winds and heavy snowfalls for a 24 hour period. Its possible we may see some impressive totals around this date.

Nozawa Snow Report 10 March 2017: Overview

Light snow is falling across the mountain here in Nozawa Onsen this morning. Although overnight totals aren’t significant, it is more than enough to top up the slopes to an almost clean slate. Expect the snow to be slightly wetter or heavier than usual attributed to the warmish (for this area) temperatures. One can assume for some good riding up top, such as the Yamabiko trees and pistes. Expect slower conditions on the lower half of the mountain. Crowd levels are light.

Yesterday we were suprised with clear weather almost all day. The riding was good, best on piste where fast paced groomers gave some adrenaline action. Off piste and the snow was heavy and sticky thanks to the warm spring sunshine. The views of the surrounding countryside were great with deep snow right down in the flat farming plains below the high peaks.

Nozawa Snow Report 10 March 2017: Forecast

Looking ahead and there are no real warm spikes ahead indication and end to the season. Instead I can see mostly snowy conditions right through next week. Although the freezing level is around 500m higher than mid winter season. Tomorrow these light snow showers will ease and we will have a mostly fine weekend. Temperatures will warm slightly at the start of next week before more snowfalls coming into Wednesday.

Nozawa Snow Report 9 March 2017: Overview

Outside today it is sunny, cool but there is no new fresh snow to report. Just an insignificant few flakes resting on the ground since the close of lifts yesterday. Regardless it’ll be a good days riding with numerous pockets of powder left over from yesterday. As the warm sun softens the snow expect spring like conditions on the south facing slopes from around midday onwards although the air temperature will remain relatively cold. North or shaded faces should offer more powder, firmer on piste.

Yesterday was a great bonus day to add to the ongoing season. The fresh snow was deep enough so the firm base layer wasn’t really an issue. Blue skies all day long with some nice sunshine although it didn’t get warm at all with snow lingering in the upper trees. The best part was that crowds were few and far between. Unfortunately I noted a lot of people with limited skills and knowledge ducking ropes and venturing to places where they really shouldn’t be. These people are not making smart choices at all. Just because its clear and following tracks doesn’t make it ok.

Nozawa Snow Report 9 March 2017: Forecast

Looking at the forecast ahead and although the snow didn’t continue as much as we expected this week there is still some in the forecast. It will remain clear today and for most of tonight. Tomorrow some snow showers are due, moderate falls totalling around 10-20cm over the 24hour period. These will gradually fade into Saturday morning. Sunday will be mostly warm and sunny. Further ahead and it looks possible for more snow next week. With such a deep snow base its going to be a long spring.

A gust of wind signals an approaching snowstorm on Yamabiko.

Nozawa Snow Report 8 March 2017: Overview

Thick snowflakes dull all sounds. Outside is eerily quiet as attentive listening reveals only the slight patter of snowflakes striking the window pane and the distant rumbling of tractors in an endless effort of removing snow from tarmac. Peaking through the frosted window reveals nothing but a sea of white; a taste of whats to come. Walking towards the elevators of the mountain and the locals are hard at work, moving dumps of snow to be placed in pools of warm volcanic water. The excitement builds as elevation increases, towards a point of release. Momentum of moving downhill, a build of speed and a turn. A waft of crystaline powder engulfs and all is good in the world. This is a powder day in Nozawa Onsen. This is today.

Late yesterday afternoon the snow moved in thick and fast a gust of wind signalling approach. A slight patch of blue sky beforehand giving zero indication of whats to come. With much of the mountain scoured ice snowfalls were sorely needed. A contrast to yesterday, today deep powder abounds.

Nozawa Snow Report 8 March 2017: Forecast

But thats not all there is much more to come. The week ahead looks ripe with constant falls of frozen water lasting until the end of the week. A brief pause of solar radiation and then its off again as the unreliable long range suggests more of the fresh stuff during the week following.

Fine Japanese architecture in its winter coat this morning.

Nozawa Snow Report 7 March 2017: Overview

The re-return of winter is upon us with 10cm being recorded since last lifts yesterday. Walking around the village this morning the sights and sounds of snow clearing were about, dampened by the falling flakes. Fresh snow makes everything beautiful again, masking the changes we have seen since the start of spring. The mountain will be good today. A firm base underneath will keep riders on their toes but there will be plenty of pockets of pow and with little competition thanks to the quiet time that is March in Nozawa Onsen. Sure makes the onsens hot too!

I think yesterday was one of the quietest days I have seen so far this season. With very little traffic on the slopes the groomed areas remained very smooth during the day. Considering the cloud and warmish temperatures the snow quality was great. Quite firm up at Yamabiko, softening through the mid elevations and slushy down at the bottom. It was interested to observe the rapid transition on runs such as Skyline.

Nozawa Snow Report 7 March 2017: Forecast

If you had a quick glance at the basic forecast graphs you would be forgiven for thinking we are still in mid winter. Plenty of snow is in the forecast with an ideal wind direction for much of the week. We expect light to moderate falls continuing today, tomorrow, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Breaks of sunshine are also possible at any point during the forecast period. Although the accumulations won’t be anything extreme they will certainly help to keep the mountain topped up with fresh powder.

Isaac skins along a steaming volcanic caldera not far from Nozawa.

Nozawa Snow Report 6 March 2017: Overview

Looks like the sun has vanished overnight and we currently have some overcast hazy skies above the village. The temperatures only just reached freezing at the top of the mountain so expect the snow quality to be mostly slushy, a little firmer up at Yamabiko. There will be some fun turns to be had on piste with very little in the way of crowds as per usual for March.

Yesterday was an awesome spring day. The snow quickly became slushy in the warm sunshine as the smell of defrosting forest wafted around the lower hills creating present aromas. The snow was best on piste with Skyline and Yamabiko particularly fun. Off piste the snow was slow and sticky, definitely a day for the groomed runs.

Todays photo shows a volcanic caldera not far from Nozawa. It is a great touring day trip for sunny spring days. We had attempted to reach this lake on Saturday but turned back due to pure laziness. I absolutely lament this decision. Yesterday some of our friends repeated the trip and came back with this great photo depicting the steaming lake that was in parts bubbling with emitted gases. Thanks for the photo Frederik! Just goes to show how centralised Nozawa Onsen is for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Nozawa Snow Report 6 March 2017: Forecast

Ahead and the forecast is for snow, snow and more snow. These will kick off later tonight and I wouldn’t be suprised to wake tomorrow with 20-30cm on the ground. These falls will continue tomorrow and Wednesday. On Thursday the weather looks to be a mix of sunshine and isolated snowfalls that will become heavier overnight into Friday. For next weekend, mostly light isolated falls of snow interspersed with sunshine. It looks like a good week is ahead of us.

The flare run as part of the lantern festival last night.

Nozawa Snow Report 5 March 2017: Overview

What a day we have here in Nozawa Onsen today. While the temperatures aren’t exactly cold with positives recorded across the mountain, the beautiful sunshine and blue skies are creating some superb spring skiing opportunities. The snow will be soft and slushy today. Playful and forgiving mountain wide with the top picks being Skyline, Yamabiko and Paradise for the beginners. Worth checking out also are the mid-station area pistes. Get out there and enjoy, this could be the last sunshine in some time before the snow clouds roll over again tomorrow afternoon.

Yesterday was a similar day to today except a little cooler. The snow was firm and fast early on before softening and becoming slushy as the temperatures warmed during the day. Last night we enjoyed a great fireworks display and snaking lantern skiing over on Hikage as part of the Nozawa Onsen lantern festival. It was a nice way to spend the evening after another fun day on the slopes.

Nozawa Snow Report 5 March 2017: Forecast

By tomorrow night we will again be under the full affect of typical Japanese snowfalls with cold temperatures and accumulations of around 20-30cm by Tuesday morning. These snowfalls will continue most of the week, fluctuating in intensity until around Friday. With such a good forecast ahead it is a reminder to us that winter can return in full force at any point during the spring season like a flick of a switch.

A stunning bluebird day in Nozawa Onsen

What a morning! The sun is shining and there is still plentiful fresh snow on offer from yesterdays falls. But its best to hit it early as the sun is expected to make a strong impact by the afternoon, rapidly warming the atmosphere. The northern aspects will offer the best quality today in addition with the Yamabiko area. Skyline might be worth a look for a sustained thigh burning descent. During the afternoon the slopes will become slushier and it’ll be best on piste. Don’t forget the camera today as the views will be awesome.

Nozawa Snow Report 4 March 2017: Overview

Yesterday we saw light snow showers continue during the morning adding another 8cm to the base. By midday the clouds were beginning to clear and we experienced a partly cloudy afternoon topped off with a nice sunset. The snow wasn’t the classic powder we are used to but it was still good, just a bit heavier and wetter than normal. Off piste stability was extremely low with numerous wet slab avalanches on all aspects.

Nozawa Snow Report 4 March 2017: Forecast

According to the forecast it’ll be clear again tomorrow morning before some clouds move over later in the afternoon. The temperatures will be a touch warmer than today as warm air flows in from the south. Further ahead and next week is shaping up very well with a sustained run of snowfalls and cold temperatures. Snow will fall from Monday until Thursday or Friday with the heaviest falls occurring at the start of the week. Over this time the winds will be generally light from the west to north west.

Pavel skies a picturesque face near Nozawa Onsen.

Nozawa Snow Report 3 March 2017: Overview

A good overnight dump of snow has affected Nozawa Onsen with 20cm accumulating at upper elevations since last lifts, more than expected. Out the window right now there are some huge flakes continuing to fall with mostly cloudy skies and occasional gusts of wind. The snow will be wet and heavy at the lower elevations however up high we should notice much better quality. Therefore it can be expected that the best skiing and boarding will be had on the upper half of the mountain for today. Snowfalls are expected to continue for the rest of the day.

Yesterday was a fun days skiing especially on the lower mountain. The snow was firm up high and slushy yet fast across the lower half. Skyline was especially fun top to bottom and offered a nice appreciation as to how the snow can vary across altitudes. As usual for the spring season the crowds were so non-existent that it felt like skiing in a private resort of some kind.

Nozawa Snow Report 3 March 2017: Forecast

After todays snowfalls the skies will clear and it’ll be mostly sunny tomorrow with light winds. Sunday will be a little warmer with clouds building during the day. By Monday afternoon more snowfalls will set in and these will continue for much of the week, probably producing an excellent period of almost mid winter like conditions.
