Nozawa Snow Report 23 February 2017: Overview

As expected mild weather and rain has moved over the region overnight creating a very maritime atmosphere in the village of Nozawa Onsen this morning. On the upside the rain isn’t heavy, more so persistent light showers. Overall the skiing will be poor off piste today and okay on piste. It will probably be more of a skiing day than snowboarding where the double edge grip can hold an advantage on piste. Some fun might be had by even crossing to the alternate side equipment wise? Another good down day activity is a visit to the world famous snow monkeys, about an hours drive away and on today.

The Famous Snow Monkeys Tour Nozawa

Today might seem like a bit of a let down after yesterdays stunner. Superb conditions across the mountain with good powder snow on offer over a firm base layer. While not entirely bottomless the windblown snow was more than welcome by abundant powder hunters. The views had to be seen to be believed, particularly north and south along Japan. The Hakuba area was especially clear and with snow coating even the flat plains of Iiyama and Nakano created more than a few photographic opportunities.

Nozawa Snow Report 23 February 2017: Forecast

Looking ahead and light snow showers will move over tonight topping up the cover with perhaps 10-15cm. These will then continue into tomorrow before clearing for a partly cloudy weekend. Another series of weak snow showers for Sunday afternoon although I don’t expect much more than a dusting from this. Early next week and a large high pressure occupies central Japan followed in by a spiralling low that might produce snowfalls from mid next week onwards.

A vast meadow of fresh lays await for Lada’s slash

Nozawa Snow Report 22 February 2017: Overview

Epic conditions across the mountain today. Light winds, mostly clear, deep snow that is almost entirely untracked and cold temperatures. Get it while it lasts. Top picks are the entire mountain, can’t go wrong today. As per usual don’t do anything stupid/beyond your abilities/without knowing where your going. Off piste is still sketchy but the designated tree areas are offering more than anyone could want at the moment.

Yesterday we saw strong winds tease us with upper mountain and Nagasaka gondola wind holds on and off through the day. All things were go first thing, but after about an hour of operation these lifts were shut down and remained offline until mid afternoon. However with deep wind compacted powder blanketing the resort this wasn’t really an issue and most found limitless fun on the lower half of the mountain. The snowfalls continued through the day bringing the 24hour total too 3pm upwards of 60cm. Thats a nice sized dump and one of the largest for February this season.

Nozawa Snow Report 22 February 2017: Forecast

Casting my eyes into fascinating field of weather forecasting I can see some foul rainfall for tomorrow. Gross! But looking further ahead and things are much more promising. Friday it’ll snow, hopefully around 10-20cm, maybe slightly more or less. For the weekend, mostly fine weather. But looking into next week and I can see a spiralling low making multiple loops from the NW over central Honshu. If this comes off we will see some substantial falls and a great start to March. Check back for updates, the predictions will become firmer as time rolls on.

Nozawa Onsen village re-buried

Nozawa Snow Report 21 February 2017: Overview

Heavy snow and strong winds are continuing to lash the resort of Nozawa Onsen in what has been a significant turn of winter. Since the close of lifts yesterday we have had 40cm fall at Yamabiko but given the strong winds and continued falls through this morning its possible that the totals are more than this. Deep snow will be had through the trees that will also provide the greatest visibility. Off piste will be extremely dangerous as the storm snow has collected over an icy base layer littered with death cookies. Stability is very low and the chance of hitting an unseen cookie underneath is very high. Luckily even on piste will offer deep powder today. To keep out of the wind and fog I can suggest exploring the lower resort areas.

Yesterday rain fell for much of the day below 1200m. During the afternoon the Nagasaka gondola re-opened allowing access to the higher mountain however conditions weren’t inspiring. Those that braved the weather encountered some decent (considering the conditions) snow. The pistes were slushy and fairly fast flowing with only a few sticky sections.

Nozawa Snow Report 21 February 2017: Forecast

During the afternoon snowfalls will gradually ease before clearing overnight tonight. I think tomorrow will be mostly fine weather with light winds and gradually warming temperatures through the day. On Thursday another tropical low will move through with some rain, not unlike yesterday. But this will turn into light to moderate snowfalls for Friday. Next weekend is predicted to be mostly fine weather.

Cloudscape over Iiyama

Nozawa Snow Report 20 February 2017: Overview

There is absolutely no sugar coating this, it is horrible weather outside right now. It is snowing at the top of the mountain (freezing point at about 1200m) however you cant actually get there thanks for strong westerly winds shutting down the upper mountain. So if you want to ski or board today it’ll be in the rain. Ill admit it can be awesome skiing in the rain with fast snow on piste but sometimes you just need to take the hint from nature and call in a rest day.

Otherwise on the agenda, a soak in one the thirteen free onsens in town. If you can manage all of them with the stamps from out the front for proof, then you can claim a free onsen towel. Wicked! Perhaps a stroll through the winding narrow streets that make up this remarkable town, I can recommend checking the natural cooking onsen up near the temple district. But its not all bad news as heavy snow will move over the resort later tonight. Maybe we will wake tomorrow with 30cm on the ground?

Yesterday the isolated snow showers quickly cleared into a fine day. The sun was shinning for much of the afternoon making for an excellent day to explore the resort. Off piste was dangerous with a sketchy crust layer and death cookies littering the gullies. Luckily on piste was fun to make up for it and the natural gullies up at Yamabiko were in fine form. To finish things off, a nice sunset over the Myoko-san volcano.

Nozawa Snow Report 20 February 2017: Forecast

Looking ahead at the forecast after tonights heavy snowfalls we are due for some very cold temperatures tomorrow. Snowfalls will continue during the day adding nicely to what was lost today. For Wednesday, some sunshine may make an appearance. Later in the week another tropical low will influence the region bringing weather not too dissimilar to today. Luckily snowfalls will once again back up the warm influx.

Tradition and powder in Nozawa Onsen.

Nozawa Snow Report 19 February 2017: Overview

Overnight the heavens opened above Nozawa Onsen puking deep powder all over the resort. Winter has returned and we are back into the swing of what has been an epic one so far. Expect today moderately deep powder across the resort above a firm base layer. This morning we will be battling with weekend crowds so every bit of information helps. If you dislike crowds avoid Yamabiko, perhaps diverting too Challenge or the Skyline blacks for advanced riders and the mid station lifts for intermediates. But be fast before the word spreads!

Yesterday across the resort we had a thin layer of powder smeared over an icy base on piste and a crust layer off piste. The riding was challenging for those who lacked a sharp edge but punters with carve skis and boards relished in the conditions. Even the sun make frequent appearances later in the afternoon which certainly helped to soften the snow at lower elevations thus improving the riding. By 730pm the switch had flipped once again as heavy snowfalls returned to the resort.

Nozawa Snow Report 19 February 2017: Forecast

Later today snowfalls should ease with blue sky patches more likely than not. Tomorrow a brief warming trend will be replaced with snowfalls once again by the evening that will continue into Tuesday. Its looking likely that we will have some period of heavy falls over this time. On Wednesday the snow will become isolated as the temperature increases heading into Thursday. For late next week we are expecting cool but not cold weather with more isolated falls of snow.

Fire festival memories

Nozawa Snow Report 18 February 2017: Overview

Delivered for us this morning courtesy of a light NW breeze we have 10cm of fresh japow up the top of Nozawa Onsen. This is certainly not any dramatic figure however it is enough to cover the icy ground on and off piste to about boot deep levels. Therefore today expect some decent skiing that is better at higher elevations and dust on crust lower down. Thanks to the warm temperatures over the last few days death cookies are plentiful off piste. Combined with the flat light caution is required to avoid hitting these semi buried cookies that can do severe damage to unsuspecting skiers and boarders. Sharp edges wouldn’t go astray on piste today which in high traffic areas may become icy as the day wears on.

Yesterday we saw rain increase into the afternoon but the snow remained in good condition, still flowing fast even with the increased moisture content. It appears any damage to the base was minimal as much of the water was simply absorbed by the deep snow. The entire upper half of the mountain remained closed as a moderate southerly wind fanned the mountain all day long.

Nozawa Snow Report 18 February 2017: Forecast

Looking ahead and snowfalls will linger on and off today becoming heavier overnight tonight. I am hopeful for 20-30cm on the ground at dawn tomorrow. On Monday the temperatures will warm again climbing back up to around 5C in the village. But this spike will be short lived as snowfalls douse the region overnight into Tuesday. From then on light snow showers are predicted on and off for the rest of the week to around 500m. Overall the next week looks quite similar to our early January weather.

From where you’d rather be

Nozawa Snow Report 17 February 2017: Overview

Its warm and windy today. However fear not! Winter is not over just yet. While wind holds are the order of the day today (currently the entire upper half of the mountain is closed due to the strong winds) and rain is in the forecast this afternoon snow will fall tomorrow to low levels, becoming heavy over the weekend. But for now slushy spring snow is to be found across the mountain. Currently the weather is mostly sunny however I expect this to change fairly quickly as some mid level cloud is on the horizon racing towards us.

Yesterday was a beautiful spring like day. Strong sunshine, a deep quality snowpack and stupendous views. The ocean greeted us to the west and the soaring Japanese Alps to the south. It was a good day to be out and about with the excellent visibility giving a good overview of the resort. The snow started firm in the morning before softening and becoming slushy in the warm sun by mid morning. In parts it became a little sticky however on piste was fine for speed.

Nozawa Snow Report 17 February 2017: Forecast

The change of the seasons are becoming more noticeable nowadays with rapid temperature swings from very cold to mild and then back again. This is what we are expecting over the next week. Snow, rain, wind and sun are all forecast at varying amounts over the next seven days. As mentioned earlier we are due for some snow over the weekend, becoming heavy on Saturday night before easing into Sunday. On Monday a brief warm spike with rain in the morning, turning to snow by the afternoon and continuing with cold temperatures persisting into Tuesday. For Wednesday some fine weather with spring snow conditions but into Thursday another tropical incursion will produce more rain followed by more consistent snowfalls into next weekend.

The majestic Mt Hiuchi.

Nozawa Snow Report 16 February 2017: Overview

Today has dawned and it looks like an absolute pearler weather wise. Clear skies above and sparkling snow below how could you go wrong with that! There is one thing that could make this day even better and thats 30cm of fresh japow but I guess you can’t have everything all the time, although that could be proven wrong the last 4 weeks.. Off piste is almost entirely tracked so the focus today will be the groomers and these will be fast early, softening during the day thanks to warm temperatures and the sunshine.

Recently we had some sad news out of the neighbouring resort Togari Onsen, so often seen lit up across the valley for night skiing. An avalanche occurred on a moderate 37 degree rolling slope during ski patrol avalanche safety work which led to three patrollers being buried unfortunately one was killed. Its a lesson for us all that even small moderate slopes can hide life threatening dangers. For anyone who wishes to ski off piste its crucial to have the knowledge and equipment necessary to deal with this ever present hazard.

Nozawa Snow Report 16 February 2017: Forecast

Look ahead and the next week looks extremely variable temperature wise. Some rain for Friday that will turn to snow overnight into Saturday as a cold front sweeps over the region. The following NW flow will deliver snowfalls, heavy at time over the weekend, across the Nagano region. A brief spike in temperatures for Monday before another short period of snowfalls during mid next week ahead of an overall warming trend.

Nozawa Snow Report 14 February 2017: Overview

Isolated light snowfalls continued on and off last night refreshing the coverage but adding no substantial amounts to the base. It won’t be enough to fill in the deep off piste tracks from yesterday but the dusting will improve the riding for on piste. Right now its mostly cloudy with a few scattered clear patches and somewhat cold temperatures. It’ll be another good but not epic days riding on and off piste. For the morning session I can recommend Yamabiko especially the natural halfpipes where some nice hips and rollers have formed. For fast carving Skyline gains my recommendation especially earlier in the morning.

Yesterday we saw variable weather for much of the day. Honestly I was expecting mostly clear weather however mist and clouds remained all day with a few scattered snow showers passing through. There was excellent riding on offer with deep fresh snow abundant from the previous storm cycle. Crowds were far fewer in comparison with the weekend previous and this was much appreciated on the slopes.

Nozawa Snow Report 14 February 2017: Forecast

Overnight tonight we are expecting further snowfalls to refresh the slopes but nothing too substantial. For tomorrow we are expecting similar weather to today but with the isolated snow showers gradually easing further. On Thursday clear weather and warm temperatures will prevail creating the first spring like conditions in a while. But this warm spell will be relatively short lived with cool temperatures and snow moving over the region for next weekend.

Nozawa Snow Report 13 February 2017: Overview

The four meter mark has been cracked in Nozawa Onsen. Times have changed since the start of January when we were looking at a very lean season indeed. The base was nudged to 4.05m yesterday afternoon and another 20cm of fresh overnight snowfalls have pushed it up again to 4.10m this morning at Yamabiko. In Nozawa Onsen the peak base depth is usually reached around end of February or start of March so it may climb even higher still. Just one more week of consistent snow and we may be nearing record territory.

Thanks to the conclusion of the Japanese holiday over the weekend the slopes will be noticeable quieter today. Which is just as well as it was one of the busiest weekends of the season! Today we have had some good falls overnight refreshing the surface layer of powder that became chopped yesterday with the crowds. Like the forecast suggested we have some partly cloudy conditions with isolated snow showers filling the voids. Another day of perfect conditions as the winter continues.

Yesterday it snowed for most of the day. At times heavy, the snow constantly refreshed to slopes. However in most areas it was no match for the shear number of people searching for any trace of powder snow and the slopes were quickly tracked out. Those lucky few that were first down were rewarded with almost flawless snow conditions.

Nozawa Snow Report 13 February 2017: Forecast

Looking ahead and tomorrow is lining up to be very similar to today with isolated snow showers and generally partly cloudy skies. Wednesday also looks similar but with more sun and less frequent snowfalls. Thursday is supposed to be full bluebird and quickly warming with strong sunshine as is Friday. By the weekend another colder period will make itself know with another few days of snowfalls.
